Star Wars’ Skywalker Saga Returns to Theaters in a 20-Hour Marathon

The Phantom Menace isn’t the only Star Wars movie being re-released in theaters this spring. Theaters like AMC and Alamo Drafthouse will be playing all nine mainline movies in a 20-hour marathon.

Playing in chronological order, the whole Skywalker Saga will effectively run from Friday, May 3 all the way to Star Wars Day on May 4. Tickets are currently on sale, and it’s going to be an all-day affair: screenings start at 8 PM on Friday, and there won’t be an intermission. You’ll basically have to make your own with whichever movies (or stretches of time) you think are the most snoozeworthy. And if you stay through the whole thing, you’ll get a special preview of the June’s The Acolyte, plus a limited edition poster that Lucasfilm hasn’t given folks a look at yet. It’s worth pointing out this’ll be a costly penny: where I live, the Skywalker Saga marathon runs a little over $84, and that may cost more depending on where you live.

For those who live in San Francisco, the Alamo Drafthouse’s New Mission theater will also host the Skywalker marathon. In between films, there’ll be games and trivia questions for audience members to go through, and there’ll be a custom menu and unlimited coffee and water. The 501st Legion, a popular fan community of Star Wars cosplayers, will also show up on May 3 to give it a proper “inspection.” There’ll also be a Star Wars-themed pop-up experience in the lobby, which will be free to the public from May 4-May 19.

It’s been long enough since Rise of Skywalker that this may be the first big movie marathon for Star Wars to play in theaters in five years, if not ever. (Disney previously did this with the MCU movies ahead of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, but it may be tougher to pull off with the Multiverse Saga.) Along with being the 25th anniversary for Phantom, 2024 will mark the five-year anniversary of Rise, and the 10-year anniversary of the first teaser for 2015’s The Force Awakens.

If you do end up going to the Skywalker Saga marathon, good luck to you—events like those sound cool, but probably take a lot out of you afterwards (and likely during as well). For everyone else, let us know any plans you’ve got to celebrate May the 4th in the comments below.
